Franz Babinger was a well-known German orientalist and historian of the Ottoman Empire, best known for his biography of the great Ottoman emperor Mehmed II known as the Conqueror. He was born on January 15, 1891, in Weiden in der Oberpfalz, Bavaria and died on June 23, 1967, in Dachau, Germany at the age of 76. He studied history and Islamic art in Würzburg and Munich.
